Your home will inevitably get dirty. You already have a cleaning routine for the home’s interior, but your exterior is a different story. Many Lincolnwood homeowners need help figuring out where to start regarding the siding.

James Hardie siding has various cleaning methods to clean your home and maintain your curb appeal. With James Hardie siding, you only need to clean your home once or twice a year. Please refrain from using a power washer, as it can damage your siding.

Cleaning Dirt Off the Siding

Dirt happens everywhere, and your home will pick up dust and dirt from wind and big storms. For dirt, you will need water and a soft cloth. You should also bring out the garden hose so it is easier to manage.

Use a soft brush to peel the dirt off your siding and spray your house. Do the same process if you’re using a soft cloth. It is best to work in side-to-side motion and follow the direction of the siding. Work from top to bottom to avoid streaks.

Cleaning Oil and Grease

Oil and grease can begin to appear in various areas of your siding, sometimes from your hands. When you notice this dirt on your siding, it is time for a wash. You can use liquid dishwashing soap and water from your garden hose.

Using a soft cloth, submerge it into the soapy water and apply the solution to the siding. Once the entire area is sudsy, you can aim for that garden hose to clear up the space. It is essential to rinse the area so no soap is left, as it can damage the siding.

Cleaning Mold and Mildew

Mildew is often confused with dirt, but they are very different. First, take a good look at the gunk on your siding. Mildew requires different cleaning products than dirt does. You will still need a soft cloth and garden hose, but you will also need a mildew-specific cleaning solution this time.

You can visit your local store and look in the cleaning section for these products. Read the cleaning solution instructions and scrub the areas that have mold and use your hose to rinse. Choose your cleaning products carefully, so you do not damage your siding.
